-La nivel local, din 3.181 de primari din România, doar 168 sunt femei (5,3%), cele mai multe – 82 – fiind din partea Partidului Social Democrat;
-La nivel central, în Camera Deputaților sunt 61 de femei dintr-un total de 330 de deputați (18,48%), iar în Senat sunt 24 de femei dintr-un total de 136 de senatori (17,64%);
I was honored to attend a meeting at the US Embassy on the participation of women in politics, administration and in making important decisions for local communities, counties and for Romania.
We talked about good practices in the #political and administrative activity of women that can generate the changes they want in society. We openly talked about prejudices, about what should be done for real #equality of opportunities, but also about were we stand right now.
Statistics regarding the representation of women in politics and administration in Romania are eloquent in this regard:
-At a local level, only 168 out of 3,181 mayors in Romania are #women (5.3%), most whom – 82 – are members of the Social Democratic Party.
-At the central level, there are 61 women out of a total of 330 deputies (18.48%) in the Chamber of Deputies and only 24 women out of a total of 136 senators (17.64%).
-In both Chambers of the Parliament, women’s representation for each parliamentary party is below 20%; the only party that exceeds this threshold is the Social Democratic Party, with 24.2% women of the total number of its MPs.
The number of women in positions like local councilors, county councillors, mayors, deputies, senators and members of the Government must increase!
I wish to thank both National Democratic Institute Romania, Mrs. Katrina Fotovat – Official of the Secretary for Global Women’s Issues from the US State Department, and Mr. David Muniz – Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy in Romania for their involvement in promoting gender equality and women’s rights!
